If you are facing an immobility challenge, you are not alone. Researchers estimate more than 40 percent of people over 65 in the United States have a mobility disorder. In fact, more senior adults suffer from mobility challenges than any other disability. What are mobility challenges and what causes immobility in older adults?

Immobility Definition

Immobility is the state of not moving. The words mobility and immobility can sometimes be confusing. Mobility means that someone is able to move. To describe someone who has trouble moving, people usually say that the adult has mobility issues.

Causes of Immobility

You might be wondering what the causes of immobility are. There are several factors that can cause immobility in adults. First, the adult might be immobile temporarily because of accidents or injuries. For example, if an adult twists his or her ankle, he or she may be immobile for a few days. However, his or her mobility will return as the ankle starts to heal. Some injuries to adults may cause mobility issues for longer periods. If an adult has knee or hip osteoarthritis, he or she may have less mobility because of pain. Not getting up and moving around only makes the pain worse.

There are other causes of immobility. Some diseases have immobility as part of their cycles. Dementia patients often have trouble with their mobility because they have trouble with balance. People with Parkinson’s disease also have trouble with their mobility because they have balance issues. Adults may also become immobile because of strokes or other brain injuries. Someone can also become immobile because he or she has multiple sclerosis or ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

What Are the Complications of Immobility?

There are several immobility complications. Adults who are mobility challenged may be OK once they are on their feet, but they have trouble getting there. For example, some adults have trouble getting in and out of bed. Some adults may find getting in and out of chairs difficult as well. Getting in and out of the bathtub might be a challenge, as well as getting on and off the toilet.

Adults who have certain diseases find it difficult to stand for long periods of time. They have trouble balancing on their feet. While most adults do not have a problem standing for long periods, adults with mobility issues might find it painful.

There are long-term complications of immobility for adults. Adults who are sedentary all day can have heart and blood vessel issues. They may also develop sores from sitting all day. Getting up and moving around, even for short periods, improves the circulation of older adults. The movement also helps the brain and heart function better. In fact, adults who can move around report less joint and back pain than adults who don’t move at all. When in doubt, it’s always better to move, even if it’s only for a few minutes at a time.
